How To Acid Stain Concrete

PatinaEtch is a waterbased translucent concrete floor stain for concrete surfaces. It contains approximately 9% acid which opens the pores of concrete allowing for colorants to naturally react with lime in cement. The results area natural variation of color.

Color

There are 7 concrete acid stain colors available in earth tones of green and brown. Color may be mixed together to create additional colors or may be layered for marbleized effect.

Surface Prep

Concrete acid stains are like wood stains, they bring out natural variations of the surface. They also bring out blemishes and imperfections. As a result concrete surfaces need to be clean of paint, glue, oil and other substances. Without proper cleaning your surface will look like a painting with annoying marks on it.

To clean surface properly refer to our cleaning  and surface prep products for appropriate solution. 175 RPM floor buffers with a coarse pad can be used.

Our concrete floor  stain video produced by concrete stain master Juan Romero provides the secrets to proper floor preparation.

If your floor has numerous imperfections the solution is a concrete overlay which does provide more color control and options.

Design

Before you begin it is important to consider your entire space. Wall colors, furniture, lighting can all have a positive or negative effect on overall design. It is always better to build around your floor rather than the other way. The more complicated the floor the more challenging becomes designing the rest of the room.

Frequently simple floors are the most elegant.

Application – How To Acid Stain Concrete

Once floor is clean and walls are prepped with tape and plastic fill your sprayer with acid stain solution. Mix on a tarp or drop cloth and wipe off any excess that spilled on to sprayer.

Tools required are broom, sprayer, rags, stain, wet vac, squeegee, sealers and microfiber mop, bucket.

Once sprayer is filled test nozzle by spraying into bucket. Cover tip with rag and walk onto floor and begin spraying a light mist on concrete surface. Hold spray tip about 18 inches from floor spraying in a random circular motion. Avoid letting stain pool on floor

It helps to have a second person who can lightly broom surface in a figure 8 motion to agitate surface, then spray lightly again over broomed area. Spray, broom, spray is the process.

Let stain dry then repeat process, this time just spray, omit broom.

If working with more than 1 color start with light color then apply darker stain.

Cleanup

Concrete acid stain must be washed with clean water. If applying stain on overlay let stain react for 30 minutes to 2 hours, on concrete slab let stain react for 2-6 hours before cleaning and neutralizing with water.

Cleaning with water serves 2 purposes:

  1. stops stain reaction with lime in concrete, the longer the stain reacts the darker the result
  2. Cleans stain residue – The best test to determine if residue is removed is by wiping a rag on floor. Rag should be clean, if not clean again. Residue must be removed to allow for sealers to proper seal floor.

Sealers

Types of sealers

  1. Acrylic Water Based – non hazardous, no odor, durable
  2. Solvent based – hazardous, mix with acetone for best results, non strippable
  3. Urethanes – solvent based, hazardous, strong and durable, non strippable

Maintenance

All floors require maintenance. Residential homes have light foot traffic and can be easily maintained by using light cleaners and dry mop with microfiber mop.

Commercial floors require specific but easy and inexpensive regular maintenance depending on foot traffic and use.

Information about proper maintenance can be found in our floor maintenance section.

Concrete Dyes

For interior floor applications, can be used over Patinaetch acid stain concrete to even out variation and to create additional color. Use on concrete slab or overlay. Translucent.

Concrete Dyes are water and solvent based. Water based dyes are user friendly and ideal on concrete overlays. Use solvent based dyes on concrete slab to intensify color.

WARNING: when using solvent based dyes keep area well ventilated. Turn off Pilot lights in boilers, close off heat vents, no smoking, avoid turning light switches which can create sparks.

Features

  • Wide color selection
  • Create unique coloring
  • Fast drying
  • Do not require neutralizing
  • Even out acid stain variation
  • 200-400 square feet per gallon

Surface prep

Floor must be clean and free of  paint, glue, dirt dust and oil. Refer to surface prep and cleaning products for solutions to floor preparation.

Application

Use specialty acetone sprayers with fine mist cone spray. Lightly apply a fine mist when using acetone concrete  dye solution.

Water based dyes can be sprayed with any type of inexpensive garden style pump sprayer  then spread using microfiber mop. Water based dyes do not offer the deep penetration on concrete slab like acetone based dyes.

Water based dyes are great on overlays whereas acetone based dyes can be a bit too intense for overlays

It is recommended to spray into a bucket first and adjust nozzle for appropriate spray pattern.

Sprayers for concrete acid stain

SP10A & SP20A
for Acid Stains

The SP10A and SP20A Acid Sprayers are the first industrial chemical sprayers expressly designed for acids - using new acid-resistant plastic and rubber compounds, plastic parts, and a PVC wand.

We have built a sprayer that is not affected by muriatic (hydrochloric) acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acids and concrete stains. That means it can be used over and over for jobs like staining or etching concrete and masonry, dissolving rust or scale on metal surfaces, cleaning, degreasing, and more.

As an extra safety measure, the sprayer comes standard with a pressure relief valve that activates at 42 psi to prevent overpressurization and to hand-release any pressure remaining in the tank after use.

The SP Acid Sprayers feature the best-engineered pumping system available, spraying continuously for 10 minutes after a single pumping session. The 12" pump tube builds pressure faster with fewer strokes. They are ideal for applying stain to concrete

The high-density polyethylene tanks with UV inhibitors are more durable than steel. The units also feature an industrial spray pistol with a spray lock position to allow the user to release the trigger while spraying.

The hose drains from the bottom of the tank, allowing the contents to be completely emptied and eliminating the need for a siphon hose.
